In 1967, Kathrine Switzer wasn’t allowed to run the Boston Marathon, but she did anyway. This year, she’s back. By Amanda Loudin

SC Story: Die Marathon-Frauen - Der lange Lauf zur Gleichberechtigung
Boston, 1967. Beim weltberühmten Marathon passiert Unglaubliches: Die 20-jährige Studentin Kathrine Switzer wird mitten auf der Strecke plötzlich gewaltsam von einem Offiziellen bedrängt. Die Rennleitung versucht, ihr die Startnummer vom Hemd zu reißen, sie so zum Abbrechen zu zwingen. Nur durch den beherzten Einsatz ihres Freundes kann Switzer entkommen und das Rennen beenden - als erste Frau, die offiziell diese Distanz bewältigt.
Weltweites Symbol für Gleichstellung der Frauen
Die Bilder dieses Vorfalls sind bis heute ein weltweites Symbol für die Gleichstellung der Frauen im Sport. Denn bis dahin war Frauen die Teilnahme am Marathon verboten. Die Gründe waren skurril: Frauen könnten nicht mehr schwanger werden, wenn sie Marathon laufen. Ihnen falle die Gebärmutter heraus. Den Frauen wüchsen Schnurrbärte, so die vorherrschende Meinung.
Olympia-Premiere erst 1984
Die Amerikanerin Switzer schwor sich nach dem Rennen, fortan für die Gleichberechtigung der Frauen im Marathon zu kämpfen. Ihr Einsatz machte sie zur Ikone der Marathon-Frauen. Etwa zeitgleich bewies in Deutschland der Arzt Ernst van Aaken durch Studien, dass Frauen sogar ausdauerfähiger sind als Männer. Van Aaaken veranstaltete in Deutschland die ersten reinen Frauen-Marathons, damals eine kleine Revolution im Sport. Doch erst 1984 führte der Kampf für Gleichberechtigung ans Ziel: Bei den Spielen in Los Angeles war der Frauen-Marathon erstmals olympisch.
Autor Ole Zeisler hat mit Zeitzeugen und den Pionierinnen in Deutschland und den USA über den langen Lauf zur Gleichberechtigung gesprochen.

Women's running pioneer Kathrine Switzer will run Boston Marathon

As a 50th Anniversary celebration, Switzer will lace up her shoes once again, pin on a “legitimate” bib and run the 121st Boston Marathon.
